We appreciate the community for supporting our kids in this way each year! Currently we have received all gifts back with the exception of 4 students. If you have one of these slips and are waiting on gifts or not quite finished, it's not a big deal but we would like to know that it is still going to be brought in. If your circumstances have changed and you are no longer able to sponsor a student, we would like to know that as well. We will make sure that all of these kids are covered, but need to know what we still need to purchase. If you have one of the slips for one of these students, please call the high school office at 870-297-3745 and let us know the number on the slip and whether you will be bringing gifts or we need to get a new sponsor. Thanks so much!

S.T.E.M. Classroom activities (SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND MATH)
PLTW empowers millions of students across the U.S. to unlock their potential by developing the in-demand, real-world knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in life beyond the classroom.
Our students had an amazing time exploring the brain in our Project Lead The Way Medical Detectives class! They have spent the semester learning how to take vitals, exploring different medical cases, and discovering what ails various patients. Now that they have explored the different parts of the brain and become familiar with it, the next step will be exploring what could cause it to be sick!
In the following pictures you see a sheep's brain. They had to label the parts of the brain.
The Elementary Christmas Program will be on Monday, December 18 @ 6:00.
In memory of Mr. Mark Green,
Mark Green was a long time resident of Big Flat, Arkansas but his second home was in Calico Rock. He worked for the Calico Rock School District from 1986 until his retirement in 2014.
Mr. Green was a teacher, librarian, and confidant to the students he served. He made an impact on every student who knew him and was inducted into the Calico Rock Hall of Honor in October of this year. His passing has left his family and friends to mourn but with fond memories as well.

We ask school leaders to please strongly encourage all juniors to sign up for the February 11 ACT. Time is short. The deadline is this Friday, January 6. Dear Principal Whiteaker,
Congratulations! Calico Rock Elementary School has been recognized by the Office for Education Policy (OEP) at the University of Arkansas as a school where students demonstrated high growth on the ACT Aspire!
As you may know, the OEP creates an annual report entitled the Outstanding Educational Performance Awards where we recognize schools with high student academic growth. We think growth is the best indicator of the positive impact that your school is having on students.
- In our Elementary School Level report published today, Calico Rock Elementary School received the following awards:
-
High Overall Growth (Northeast region)
-
High Math Growth (Northeast region)
Awards are based on the 2022 content growth score calculated by the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education. These growth scores reflect how much students at the school improved from 2021 compared to how much they were expected to grow considering prior achievement. We recognize schools based on Overall growth, as well as for growth in Math and English Language Arts separately. To learn more about how we determined the OEP award winners and to see the full list of award recipients, you can view the report here.
We congratulate you on this accomplishment and hope that you will share this good news with teachers, students, and others who contributed to your school's success.

Calico Rock Host 1st District Cross Country Meet
Calico Rock hosted its first ever cross country and first ever 1A-2 District Cross Country meet on October 18th at Calico Rock High School. The meet featured seventy eight runners from four area schools all competing to be individual and team cross country champion.
Timbo, Norfork, Viola, and host school Calico Rock all competed over a 1.55 mile course that encompassed the Calico Rock High School Campus and Earl King Park.
The Jr. High teams competed at 1.55 miles while the Sr. High teams competed at 3.1 mile races.
In Jr. Girls, Viola was District Champion with Calico Rock Jr. Girls placing District Runner Up. In Jr. Boys, Timbo won the District Championship by just 3 points over Calico Rock. Timbo also won the Sr. Boys District Championship as well. The Sr. Girls Division only individual awards were awarded as no schools had enough participants to qualify for team Awards. Grace Hudson of Calico Rock was the 1A-2 Sr. Girls District Champion with a time of 24:45 over 3.1 miles.
"In discussions with the Athletic Director Alex Skidmore We thought it would be great for our runners to try and host a meet and that is how the idea to host this meet began. " stated Coach Chip McDonald
" I felt the meet ran very smoothly. I'd like to thank all the other athletes, coaches, and parents here that volunteered so that we could put on this meet. Also, I am very proud of our runners who ran their best times of the year. I hope we can make this an annual event and grow the number of schools that come. " Coach Chip McDonald
"We had six runners place in the top 5 in their races. Emma Brickell 3rd, Kaylee Galloway5th (Jr. Girls); Grace Hudson 1st (Sr. Girls); Aiden Harris 2nd, Aden Otto 3rd ( Jr. Boys); and Luke Moody 5th (Sr. Boys). Our Jr. Teams won the schools first ever District Runner-up team Plaques. Along with the record number of runners we had this year this has been a very good year for Cross Country at Calico Rock. My hope is we can keep building on this success next year and in the future." Coach Chip McDonald

In 2003, Arkansas established the first statewide multifaceted strategy to combat the epidemic of childhood and adolescent obesity. One component of these strategies was the reporting of health risk information to each parent through an assessment of their child's height and weight using the body mass index (BMI) screening tool. This fact sheet summarizes the history of the BMI initiative, describes the measurement process, and provides examples of reporting and data applications.
Key Takeaways
The Arkansas General Assembly passed Act 1220 of 2003, requiring every public school student to have an annual body mass index (BMI) assessment performed. The measurement schedule was modified in 2007 to students in grades K, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10; The assessment is reported confidentially to students' parents with an explanation of the possible negative health impact of a high BMI, as well as suggestions for healthy eating and physical activity; School district and school aggregate data have been used in grant application funding requests, school improvement plans, student projects and food-weight impact studies.
This information is from: https://achi.net/library/bmi-measurement-arkansas/

These growth bacterial cultures are the results of a Biology lab in which students swabbed a sample from their phones to see what bacteria may be on them. From recent experiments, the cell phone has become one of the dirtiest objects within a household (the former item being the TV remote), they are even dirtier than a toilet seat. Students wanted to test if this statement was actually true. As a result, they were thoroughly grossed out by the result. On the cultures you can see: Staphylococcus Aureus ( the golden yellow dots) which is a bacteria that is commonly found on the human body like many other bacteria in the Staphylococcus family, the white dots are Candida a type of yeast commonly found on the skin and the main culprit for Cutaneous Candidiasis (a type of yeast infection), and the large fuzzy circle with the green center is mold. We wanted to share this with the community as a reminder to please sanitize your phones and as always wash your hands, because if these microorganisms are on your phone then they are also on your hands.

Over 420 students competed in the Y.E.S. for Arkansas (Youth Entrepreneur Showcase for Arkansas) business plan competition. Calico Rock GT had two teams that were announced to the Top 25 Finalists and went on to compete in the virtual finals, January 21st.
The Y.E.S. for Arkansas Competition is put on by the state capital and brings a unique level of awareness to entrepreneur education not found elsewhere on a statewide scale. It's hands-on and students are responsible for writing the business plan. Students must invent something new or think of an innovative way to make something that already exists, even better. They have to figure out how their idea will work, how it can be brought to market, and do the math to see if it can make money. Cash prizes will be awarded for Best Business Plan, Most Innovative Idea, Best Retail Booth Display, and Best Marketing Piece. Our students are well on their way to proving their products are in fact marketable.
Sydney Stanley, Gracie Hicks, and Jaelyn Whiteaker are the creators of Moo Moo Brownies and say they can't keep their brownies made fast enough. They aren't just regular brownies, they are made with healthy ingredients like spinach and built in 3D shapes to look like a cow. You'll never have to fight to get your kids to eat their vegetables again!
Kenley Whiteaker actually started her idea as a Shark Tank assignment in her classroom, but was quickly challenged by Mrs. Pool to expand on the idea and compete in the Y.E.S. Competition. Rather than coming up with another idea, she decided to help combat bullying for kids who wear glasses and build on her existing idea. Kenley's Glamorous Glasses Charms are unique personalized charms that fit on your glasses. They are for boys and girls of all ages! She has sold out of her product multiple times already. Kenlee even made a commercial to promote her charms. When she showed her teacher her commercial, she asked her mom to take it down until she had a patent on her product. Her mom, grandma, and teacher believed so much in her product, Kenley filed for her first patent on her product.
In the final competition, Kenley won 2nd Place for Best Retail Booth, winning $75.00 for herself and $300.00 for the sponsoring teacher, Mrs. Kish Pool. Mrs. Pool and her students have been preparing for this competition since October 2021. Kenley is a 4th grader and first time competitor against 5th-8th grade students across the state. She stood out as a top competitor!
In addition to the competition, Friday, January 14, only 7 teams were chosen by the Venture Center in Little Rock to present their products and these two teams were among those chosen. Calico Rock Students are doing big things. Congratulations to both teams. You can purchase charms on Instagram at Kenley's Glamorous Glasses Charms!
Kenley Whiteaker placed 2nd for Best Retail Booth in the Y.E.S. for Arkansas Entrepreneur Business Competition hosted by the Arkansas State Capital.

The Calico Rock High School has been recognized by the Office for Education Policy (OEP) at the University of Arkansas as a school that is Beating the Odds, because students demonstrated high growth on the ACT Aspire even though the school serves a high percentage of students who participate in Free and Reduced Lunch! As you may know, the OEP creates an annual report entitled the Outstanding Educational Performance Awards, recognizing schools with high student growth. We think growth is the best indicator of the positive impact that your school is having on students.
Calico received the following "Beating the Odds" awards:
High Math Growth: High School Level (Northeast Region)
High ELA Growth: High School Level (Northeast Region)
Awards are based on the 2021 content growth score calculated by the Arkansas Department of Education. These growth scores reflect how much students at the school improved from 2019 compared to how much they were expected to grow. The Office for Education Policy Recognizes schools based on Overall growth, as well as for growth in Math and English Language Arts separately.
We congratulate you on this accomplishment and hope that you will share this good news with teachers, students, and others who contributed to your school's success.
Congratulations again on "Beating the Odds"!

The Calico Rock School District is pleased to announce that USDA has authorized all meals served in the 2021-2022 school year to be at no cost to the students.
However, we need all families to continue to fill out and return meal applications just as you have in the past. Your school district could potentially receive federal dollars based on the number of students who are eligible for free or reduced meals. In other words, the more students who are eligible, the more federal dollars the district receives to pay for things like tutoring and technology. Pandemic-EBT cards could potentially be determined based on free or reduced meal status for the 2022 summer.
If you need assistance with the application contact Stacy Sherrill at the high school (870)-297-3745, Julie Hargett at the elementary (870)-297-8533 or Chelsie Moss at the central office (870)-297-8339. As always, we are glad to help our Pirate families.
Thank you for your support!
On August 12, 2021 the Calico Rock Board of Directors adopted the following Covid-19 Precautions Plan.
Calico Rock School District Covid-19 Precautions Plan
Purpose: The intent of the plan is to provide guidance for the Calico Rock School District regarding the use of Covid-19 precautions based on the prevalence of Covid-19 within the Calico Rock School District.
Reason: The health and welfare of the Calico Rock students, staff and the community are a priority due to the potential effects of Covid-19. Also, the prevalence of Covid-19 and the high rate of transmission of the new Delta variant puts our students at higher risk than before. Onsite instruction is the more effective method to meet the educational, social and emotional needs of our students. The wearing of mask/face coverings is one tool that reduces the chance of exposure and lowers the rate of transmission when worn properly (covering the nose and mouth).
Source: Data to guide the parameters of the plan will be reviewed by the administrative team utilizing https://achi.net/covid19/ and/or covidactnow.org as its primary data sources. This guideline is subject to adjustments based on guidelines received from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Standard Precautions: At all levels of risk, classrooms should continue to emphasize the use of washing hands, barriers, daily screening for Covid-19 symptoms, physical distancing, and thorough disinfecting of facilities and buses.
Who: All staff K-12 and students of K-12.
What: Wearing of mask/face-coverings for the Calico Rock School District.
Where: Masks/face-coverings at all Calico Rock School District indoor venues including transportation on buses and when physical distancing of 3-6 feet or more is not an option. Athletic activities and music practice and competition are exempt from indoor masking: rigorous exercise in P.E. or recess are exempt from indoor masking.
When: The Calico Rock Schools mask/face-coverings plan for indoor venues will continue until further notice.
At this time the American Pediatric Association recommends starting school with mask or face coverings required. Also, Izard County is considered to be at a high risk based on the number of cases in the county.

The active COVID-19 cases in Arkansas have surged this week with 1475 new cases in a 24-hour period, 15 deaths and 98 people on ventilators, as reported by KARK 4 in Little Rock. Izard county has 52 active cases as well.
That being said, it is with regret and disappointment that we believe it is in the best interest of everyone involved to cancel the Pee Wee basketball camp scheduled for July 20-22, 2021. However, we look forward to rescheduling the event next year.
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Stay safe, sanitize, social distance and mask up when necessary.

Wearing a mask at school is now optional. We applaude any students or staff members who choose to wear a mask due to protecting themselves or loved ones they may reside with, however, if students or staff members choose not to wear masks they have the option to do so.

Keeley Pool is a senior at Calico Rock High School that is determined to make a positive change in this world. Knowing how difficult the end of last year was as well as going into her senior year with so many restrictions, she wanted to help others get through this time by spreading a little positivity. She knows all too well that we all have bad days, but it always makes her feel better and have a more positive outlook on each day by brightening someone else's day. At the beginning of this school year, she decided to start Random Acts of Kindness and challenged others to pay it forward. She started the year off by putting small bags of candy and a Random Acts of Kindness note and challenge on every student's locker as well as every school employee's door. The love didn't stop there. She has extended this project to her job, church, ball teams, and most recently to the entire Calico Rock Elementary School. Keeley sent a letter out to all of the elementary students asking them to Bee the Change and Be Kind. The students were asked to bring in change for a week. The winning class would receive popcorn, a drink, and an extra recess provided by Keeley herself. The challenge was accepted and the students were buzzing about this competition all week long. Keeley explained to them that all of the money that was brought in would be donated to the Calico Rock Bridges program. By the end of the week, Keeley and the elementary students raised $1000.27! She went back to each class and thanked the students personally and wanted to encourage them to always have a giving heart and that each day there are opportunities for us to help others if we will just look for them.
Bridges is a local non-profit organization that serves the students and their families in the Calico Rock School District. The program is there to Bridge the Gap between need and education for those students in K-12. This could be by providing food, clothing, school supplies, help with bills, medical expenses, travel to doctors appointments, ect. Currently the program is sending home food backpacks to approximately 70 children a week and serving over 30 families in our school district. We also have an onsite room that has clothing and hygiene necessities readily available to the students. We are so thankful for the generosity of individuals and community organizations that support this program. The program is ran solely on donation and grants that are applied for and volunteers that donate their time and services.
Thanks to the efforts of Ms. Chelsie Moss a grant was awarded to the Calico Rock School District earlier this year. Eligible families in the Calico Rock School District can receive blessing boxes each week. The picture in this post is a sample of what families will be receiving. Thank you Ms. Chelsie Moss for your hard work.

Johnathan Morehead- 10th grade
Johnathan was chosen for student of the week for his strong work ethic and his willingness to assist others. In my classroom, Johnathan is always prepared for class and ready to work. No matter what the task or equipment he is asked to work with, Johnathan always has a great attitude. Not only does Johnathan work hard, he also is a responsible, considerate young man. I believe Johnathan exemplifies what it means to be a Calico Rock Pirate and is very deserving of the Student of the Week Award.

Calico Rock Senior Beta Club/Beta Members Participate (s) in State Competition Calico Rock, AR 2/23/21 -National Beta members from Calico Rock High School are celebrating their recent participation in Arkansas Senior Beta Virtual State Convention. They were announced as winners of the following competitions: Color Photography- Keeley Pool, Agri-Science- Shelby Walters
Typically, National Beta State Conventions bring together students from across the state to compete in a variety of competitions ranging from academic and STEM-based to visual and performing arts. While State Convention, originally planned to be held in Hot Springs, AR, was cancelled for in-person competitions due to health and safety concerns stemming from the COVID-19, members worked hard while taking online tests and preparing competition submissions for their Virtual Convention. Their victories at the state level provide the opportunity to compete at the national level. National Convention will be held at the Swan and Dolphin Resort at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida during Summer 2021.
With more than 500,000 active members and 8,750 clubs nationally and internationally, National Beta has become the nation's largest independent, non-profit, educational youth organization. National Beta promotes the ideals of academic achievement, character, service and leadership among elementary and secondary school students. National Junior Beta includes grades 4-8 and National Senior Beta includes grades 9-12. Visit betaclub.org for more information.

Words cannot fill the void created by the loss of a loved one, much less the loss of an icon.
Bobby D. Hulse was an icon to the Panther Nation. He came to Norfork as the high school principal my senior year in 1980-81. He remained there as principal for the next 40 years shaping lives of both students and teachers alike. He was my high school principal for only one year, however, he made an impact that has lasted a lifetime. Mrs. Nordrum was more fortunate, as she had the experience of having him as her principal for 6 years.
As a neighboring school many of our students, coaches, teachers and administrators have come in contact with Mr. Hulse over the years. It was easy to see his impact on Norfork schools, students, and community.
The Pirate Nation is keeping Norfork in our thoughts and prayers as they mourn the loss of a leader.

Junior Beta Club Announces
Calico Rock, AR, December 9, 2020-National Junior Beta officers from Calico Rock High School are celebrating their recent participation in the Arkansas Virtual Leadership Summit. Today, they were announced as National qualifiers for the "Lead Outside the Box" challenge. Caroline Mitchell (President), Alia Kearbey (Vice President), Scarlett Owens (Secretary/Treasurer), and Mylie Waire (Student Council representative) comprised the team which represented the entire club.
Typically, National Beta Leadership Summits bring together students from multiple states for 1-2 day events. During that time, students work with interactive speakers who engage members through introspective exercises and team-building activities. Clubs can also participate in team-based leadership challenges, which test their communication, critical thinking, creativity, presentation, and collaboration skills. While the Leadership Summit, originally planned to be held in Hot Springs, AR, was canceled for in-person attendance due to health and safety concerns stemming from the COVID-19, members were able to work together to submit their challenges online and met virtually for interactive leadership trainings from Bill Cordes and Ted Weise. Their victory at this level provides the opportunity to compete at the national level. National Convention will be held at the Swan and Dolphin Resort at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida during Summer 2021.
"This challenge forces our students to work together to solve problems in a unique way. This year's prompt was to identify challenges that our students can tackle on their own with an Interactive Survival Guide. It needed to address attendance, academic, extracurricular, parental, student, and teacher support, along with creating a safe space so that students can physically go and de-stress," said Tracy Hodges, advisor, "It was not an easy challenge, and I was so impressed with the officers' abilities to put other needs above their own."
The Calico Rock Junior Beta Club has 21 members in grades 7-8, and its motto is to "Lead By Serving Others." The organization will be sending home invitations to potential 6th grade members next week. Some of the other projects the club is working on this year include electing a Teacher of the Month, creating school pride signs, and keeping the student treasure chests full.
The Deer bus will be running about 15 minutes behind schedule. Please excuse the inconvenience. Please call the office @ 870-297-8533.
Our Calico Rock School District Angel Tree gifts need to be turned in ASAP please.
We have 8 that we are missing at this time.
If you have gifts that you are waiting on to come in, please give the office a call at 870-297-3745 and let us know.
We appreciate the love and blessings given by our community to our students each year through this program!
This week we will focus on the Student Council.

There will be basketball games at Concord tomorrow night. The games will start at 5:00 p.m.
The order of games will be 7B girls, 7B boys and Sr. Girls.
It will be very cold tomorrow so make sure you dress appropriately!
Due to some of our students being probable close contacts for COVID-19 and the district still doing contact tracing, we have postponed tonight's games at Norfork.
As result of contact tracing we are quarantining more students as probable close contacts to a positive case. For COVID-19, a close contact is anyone who was within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes. An infected person can spread COVID-19 starting 48 hours (or 2 days) before the person had any symptoms or tested positive for COVID-19.
This is a good time to remind everyone of the signs and symptoms of COVID-19 and the importance of staying home until you have been fever free (without the use of medication) and symptom free for at least 24 hours. The symptoms can range from simple allergies to a fever and chills and/or body aches, a sore throat or cough. Any one or combination of these symptoms can be COVID related. While you may have only mild symptoms, others may develop very serious illnesses.
Be smart, do your part. Our odds are better when we practice the three w's. Wash your hands, wear your masks and watch your distance.
May you all have a very safe and happy Thanksgiving.
At tonight's school board meeting, Mr. Skidmore recommended, and the board approved, that November 23rd and 24th, 2020 to be virtual days for our school district. Teachers will be on campus and available to students during those days. High school students will do their work and make-up work from home on their device. Elementary students will have assignments made by their teachers as well. January 29, 2021 will also be a virtual day so mark that day on your calendar also.
School meals are available to be delivered to students. Please contact the office by 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Nov 20th to let us know if you want meals delivered on Monday and Tuesday of next week.
- Elementary office 870-297-8533
- High School office 870-297-3745
This recommendation was made so that we can extend the time we are apart, lessening possible exposure to the virus. Therefore, be smart and do your part. Wear your mask, wash your hands and watch your distance and have a safe and healthy holiday.
The games for Nov 26th are postponed for later dates.
The "B" games scheduled for Thursday night will be rescheduled for a later date.
The Junior Boys "A" game will be played on Dec 8th on a Senior game night already scheduled.
The Junior Girls "A" game will be played on Jan 26th on a Senior game night already scheduled.
COVID-19 Media Release
We regret to inform you that we currently have 2 people in our buildings who have tested positive for COVID-19. Today we identified 22 students and 2 personnel as close contacts. Up to this point all of the contacts have been with positive cases outside the district. Thanks to the diligent "contact tracing" of Mrs. LaDonna Franks, the principals and teachers, we were able to identify the students who were in contact with the people who tested positive and they are all quarantined.
We have been in contact with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Department of Health weekly and sometimes daily regarding our district and community status. Their recommendations are consistent across the state, continue with face to face instruction if at all possible and base decisions on district data. My conversation with DESE this evening gleaned the same recommendation.
It is unfortunate, however, we all knew this would happen sooner or later. I know I've said it in the past but thank you again for understanding and being patient. This school year is going to be a trying time for everyone. On the other hand, I know this community will do everything possible to work together in preventing the spread of this virus. If we err, I hope it will be on the side of caution.
Remember to social distance, wear your face mask and wash or sanitize your hands frequently.
Thank you,
There are some extra tickets available at the high school office for the ballgames tonight.
The games will be starting at 6:00 tonight and it will be the Jr. Boys and Sr. Boys vs Sloan Hendrix.
The high school and elementary will have Make-Up Picture Day on Monday, November 16. This will be for class pictures and any senior who has not had their picture made.
Please dress accordingly.
As part of a coordinated response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) in partnership with the Office for Education Policy (OEP) at the University of Arkansas has developed this Parent/Guardian Survey<https://uark.qualtrics.
Parent Survey purpose:
The survey seeks to involve families in an organized, ongoing and timely way in planning, review, and improvement.
The survey will provide feedback regarding:
* family concerns
* how families are making decisions
* family awareness of options and resources available
* family considerations for the future
The intention of this survey is not to identify individual district responses, but rather to establish an understanding of the state as a whole. The information will be aggregated by region only; therefore, families will be asked to identify the region of the state in which they live in order to understand the distribution of the survey without specifically identifying any district by name.
Thank you for taking the time to respond to the survey.
KIAP Classes will be cancelled until after the Thanksgiving Holiday. We will reschedule KIAP at a later date.
The Calico Rock FFA is hosting its annual Harvest Supper at the Calico Rock Elementary parking lot on Friday November 20th. FFA members will be selling meal tickets for $10 each. Due to COVID-19, there will be drive thru pick up only. Pick up will last from 4:30 to 7:00. Tickets can be purchased from an FFA member, come, the High School Office or upon arrival at the Elementary.
The Calico Rock School District would like to say to all veterans of all branches: Thank you for your sacrifice, your bravery, and the example you set for us all. Thank you for your service!
This following video was created to honor your service:
You can what this weeks post here:
Dear Pirates,
We regret to inform you that a Cotter student who played in last night's game tested positive for Covid-19 late this afternoon. As a result we are quarantining our Sr. Girls basketball team for 14 days or until we can determine who was in close contact with that student. Today November 6, 2020 is day one of the quarantine period.
We hope that everyone will be very diligent in practicing social distancing, wearing face masks and washing their hands. Our hopes and prayers are that this virus will have a minimal impact on our community.
On a more positive note, we have no known positive cases in our buildings at this time. This quarantine is a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the virus in our school and community. Please stay safe.
Sincerely,
Jerry Skidmore, Superintendent

A 2 year vision was presented to the CRHS student body to paint interactive murals throughout Calico Rock to promote tourism and community involvement. Maddie Thornton volunteered on behalf of the Gifted & Talented students, to speak as a student advocate to present the idea to the City Council. Maddie and Mrs. Pool came up with different mural ideas to be painted over a period of time. Mayor Greg Hamby volunteered the City Hall building for the first 2-3 interactive murals. This Fall, the CRHS GT will join forces with the Art Teacher, Mr. Baker, to begin the project. The council voted unanimously in support of this project. The first 2 murals will be 2 sets of wings and a fun fishing scenery. More to come in 2021!
The Calico Rock School District is pleased to announce that USDA has authorized all meals served in August to be at no cost to the students because the Calico Rock School District was approved for the Seamless Summer program earlier this year! We will be serving meals to all students at no cost as long as funds are available until December 31, 2020!
However, we need all families to continue to fill out and return meal applications just as you have in the past. Your school district receives federal dollars based on the number of students who are eligible for free or reduced meals. In other words, the more students who are eligible, the more federal dollars the district receives to pay for things like tutoring and technology.
If you need assistance with the application contact Stacy Sherrill at the high school (870)-297-3745, Julie Hargett at the elementary (870)-297-8533 or Chelsie Moss at the central office (870-297-8339. As always, we are glad to help our Pirate families.
Thank you for your support.
If you have not filled out your 2020-21 lunch form, please do so as soon as possible. School lunch forms are filled out each year to reflect the current status of the household. If you are in need of additional information or forms, please contact the High School @ 870-297-3745 or the Elementary @ 870-297-8533. Thank you for your cooperation.

Dear Parents,
Working in the public school system today is very rewarding yet very trying at the same time. Sometimes there are things we want to share with you, the parents, in order to maintain your trust but at the same time, for privacy reasons, we cannot. Therefore, we are careful and limit the information that we put out to the public. I think you understand.
That being said, I regret to inform you that an employee and a student have been determined to be a "Close Contact" in regards to the COVID-19. A Close Contact is someone who has been in close contact with another person who tested positive. They would have been in close contact with that person for a cumulative of 15 minutes within 48 hours prior to them receiving the positive test results. The employee in this situation has tested negative. Unless a new test indicates the first one was a false positive, the employee will have to quarantine for 14-24 days and will not be on campus. For now, that is all that I am at liberty to share with you.
The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) have set protocols for districts to follow in these situations. For example, we are required to have a Point of Contact (POC) and an alternate for employees to report to and to be the liaison between the District and ADH. More information about the POC can be found in your child's packet.
Please be assured that we are taking precautions to keep our children and our employees safe and healthy.
Thank you for trusting Calico Rock School District and for your patience in these trying times.
Sincerely,
Jerry Skidmore, Superintendent
Calico Rock School District

I am so looking forward to seeing everyone both in person and via the Zoom meeting. 8:00 a.m. can't get here fast enough!!! See you in the morning!

The last few months, National Beta members from Calico Rock High School have been working hard to submit their entries for the National Beta Virtual Convention. In late July, they were able to celebrate that hard work when announced as winners of the following competition: Calico Rock, Senior, Clayton Thompson 10th place in Agriscience. Calico Rock Beta Club/Beta Member Places in National Competition
Calico Rock Senior Beta Club Members originally competed and received awards during their State Convention held in Hot SpringsLittle Rock, AR in January, 2020. Clayton Thompson received 4th place in state competition for Agriscience and team members: Jacob Crawford, Isaac Hall, Colten Clinkingbeard & Bryson Hicks all placed 1st in the state Engineering competition. Their victory at the state level provided an opportunity to compete at the national level. The National Convention, originally planned to be held in Fort Worth, TX, was cancelled due to health and safety concerns stemming from the Coronavirus pandemic. However, over 12,000 Junior Beta (grades 4-8) and Senior Beta (grades 9-12) students were able to represent their schools in the first National Beta Virtual Convention.
"We are so proud of all our National Beta competitors. This year they had to overcome obstacles, present their projects via video, and do online testing. These young men went above and beyond to be successful and we thank them for their dedication. We are so excited for Clayton to be recognized as a National Beta Convention Winner!" says club sponsors: Melva Brannon & April Killian
It's time to start scheduling classes! Each day Mrs. Stephanie will be available from 8:30 to 2:30 to schedule classes with students.
The days will be as follows:
COVID-19 Update 7-13-2020
Everyone probably knows that Governor Hutchinson and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has decided to push the start date for Arkansas schools back to August 24th. This will be our first day of school. Open House is scheduled for August 18th, however, it will be different this year. Open House will be a meet and greet in the parking lot at both the high school and elementary. This will allow for more social distancing as encouraged by the Arkansas Department of Health. The principals will be posting more detailed information regarding the Open House event.
Also, I want to remind everyone about the survey that we sent out last week. Please be sure to answer the survey questions promptly and honestly. Your responses are important to us and to the decisions we have to make.
We want our parents and students to rest assured that we will provide a safe and sanitized environment throughout the year. Our plan is to sanitize buses and classrooms daily and multiple times when necessary. We have purchased a room fogger for the purpose of sanitizing rooms in addition to wiping down the desk, door knobs and keyboards. Additionally, the district has ordered water bottle filling stations to retrofit drinking fountains and more touchless paper towel dispensers. I'm asked almost on a regular basis, "are you going to require the students to wear a mask?" We will encourage students to wear a mask and masks will be provided for them on a limited basis. Each student will receive three washable masks. Teachers will also be given masks, however, it is not a requirement to wear a mask at this time. We will also encourage social distancing as much as possible every day. The Arkansas Department of Health has recommended that we be at least 6 feet apart and or wear a mask for the best results in combating the spread of COVID-19. Most of you have spent some time with your children explaining the importance of this but if you haven't, please do so before the start of school. This year, upon entrance to each building, employee's and student's temperature will be taken and a set of health questions asked. If their temperature is less than 100.4, they can enter. Of course, other or pre-existing policies remain in place also. Last but not least, visitors will not be allowed in the buildings except for emergencies or in the case of prior appointment. These are some changes taking place this year in order to protect everyone from COVID-19.
Other changes will include the method of instruction. Traditional in class instruction and paper AMI packets are a thing of the past. Instead, in class instruction will be blended with online learning delivered by internet or other means of technology. The plan is to provide a Chrome Book for every student so they can utilize the internet to receive instructions and turn in their lessons. For the students who do not have internet, hot spots will be available in different areas within the district for this purpose.
Vendors across the state are scrambling to provide curriculum that addresses state standards for instruction. So, frequently, we are receiving new information regarding methods of pushing out instruction and content for instruction. We will be using the same curriculum content as in the past in addition to Lincoln Empowerment (Content) for instruction. A Learning Management System (LMS) will be used to push out instruction to students at home. This will allow for an easy pivot from the traditional face-to-face instruction to online learning.
Please remember to do the survey we pushed out last week. It is vital to making decisions for the upcoming school year. Thank you, for your patience and understanding in these difficult times.
I hope you and your families are practicing social distancing and taking other precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Again, thank you for your support and stay safe.
Jerry Skidmore, Superintendent
Calico Rock School District

In response to COVID-19 public health emergency, a benefit program called Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) has been developed for States to implement in assisting families that were receiving free or reduced lunches from their school. The program was designed to help replace the cost of meals incurred by families as a result of the State eliminating public school gathering.
What is P-EBT?
- A program to provide nutrition benefits to families who have lost access to free or reduced-price school meals because schools were closed.
- Eligible students and families will receive food benefits on a new or existing EBT card to help fill the school meals gap.
- P-EBT is for eligible children in public and private schools.
How will P-EBT be paid? Amount to be paid?
- This will be paid in a one-time payment and will be $319 per eligible child.
- Benefits will be issued to a SNAP household on their existing EBT Card.
- If a household has had their SNAP case close in the last 6 months, benefits will be issued on that household's existing EBT Card.
- Non-SNAP households will receive an EBT Card(s) with their child's name on it. (See attached Buck Slip on instructions to activate the EBT card.)
When will P-EBT be issued?
- Benefits should be issued by the end of June or early July.
- Guidance will be forthcoming regarding the exact dates the benefits will be issued.
- New P-EBT cards that are being issued will not be all mailed on the same day, but over a period of several days.
Addresses may not be up to date for students that will be receiving the P-EBT card due to schools closing in March. Guidance below is for Parents to update their address if needed.
Non-SNAP Households:
- Parents can call Client Assistance at 1-800-482-8988.
- Parents can email their address change to pebt@dhs.arkansas.gov.
- New address changes will be recorded up to June 15th, so that the information can be sent to the vendor for card issuance.
SNAP Households:
- Parents will follow the same DCO business process that is in place by reporting their changes to Client Assistance or their local county office.
Note: Parents that do not receive SNAP and would like to verify if their address is correct should contact (call or email) their child's school district to determine if the school has the current address.
Attached is a flyer with the information needed to help assist with various questions that may arise. The P-EBT email address can also be used by anyone to ask questions specifically related to P-EBT.
Also attached is the Buck Slip insert that will be included in the mailing of the new P-EBT card offering guidance on activating the EBT card and general rules.
The DHS website also has some Q&A's that will help assist with answering questions concerning EBT. The link is: https://humanservices.arkansas.gov/resources/response-covid-19/response-covid-19-client/pandemic-snap.
As stated above, DHS will accept address updates by these methods through COB 6/15/2020. All updated addresses will be added as edits to the master file and become the address of record for the mailing.
If you have any questions please contact the SNAP Policy Unit.

March, 7, 2020
Good Morning,
Yesterday the governor cancelled onsite instruction for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. This means that education will continue through the Alternative Method of Instruction (AMI) that we have been using since March 16, 2020. We will gladly continue to provide meals and assistance with the AMI packets. If you have any questions, call your teacher or principal and they will be happy to assist. Your support and patience has been tremendous and we appreciate everything our community is doing to help in this time of crisis.
Please let us know of any children 18 years of age or younger in need of meals so we can add them to our list. We deliver breakfast and lunch each day beginning around 10:00 am. The number of meals per day has been around 375 and continues to increase as the need arises. Teachers, staff, bus drivers and the cooks have been eager to help so if you have a chance, tell them thank you.
We will have a graduation ceremony as soon as it is safe to do so. We want to celebrate the successes of our seniors & give them the recognition they deserve.
Remember to be Pirate strong and follow the CDC guidelines by washing your hands, maintaining a social distance of 6' or more and self-isolate if necessary.
Go Pirates!!!
Sincerely,
Jerry Skidmore, Superintendent
Calico Rock School District

COVID-19 Update 3-13-20 #2
A press conference was held Thursday 3-13-20 at 1:30 pm by Governor Asa Hutchinson. Based the guidance provided by the Center for Disease Control it is NOT recommend to close schools unless a case of the virus has been confirmed in that community. The Governor has faith that the people of Arkansas will use good judgement in these matters and follow the protocol recommended by the CDC.
Johnny Key, Commissioner of Education says that based on CDC guidance, schools are the safest place for students to be unless they have a confirmed case of COVID-19 in their community. He said, It would not be prudent to interrupt the educational process where some students are receiving services in addition to education such as meals and mental health services that they depend on daily. Therefore, the focus is on keeping schools open at this time.
The total presumptive positive cases in Arkansas as of (3-13-20) is up to 9 and all of those cases are in the Little Rock area.
Calico Rock School District would like to inform everyone that school districts in Arkansas have been granted 5 additional AMI days. We have used 3 of our original 5, therefore we now have 7 days to use. We hope they will not be needed.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
Avoid close contact
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick
- Put distance between yourself and other people if COVID-19 is spreading in your community.

For the past three years, we have had students qualify to compete at the National level and we hope to do that again this summer- BUT first we have to make it through state! I am super excited for this experience- I honestly cannot tell you the amount of growth I have seen this experience gives my students! I have seen their confidence & presentation skills absolutely soar because of FBLA competitions! Come out to Pizza Inn 🍕 on March 5th and enjoy some great food and wonderful, friendly service-we would love to serve you! These Future Business Leaders of America will thank you greatly!! If you cannot make it but would like to make a donation, please contact me!
